This 3-5 page paper (standard formatting, double-spaced) should briefly outline your perceived strengths and weaknesses as a negotiator, and clearly identify at least 3 “SMART” goals you want to accomplish this semester relevant to this course. These personal goals must be BEHAVIORAL goals–things you want to DO differently, behaviors you want to modify. Please make sure that they are “SMART” goals–each and every goal should demonstrate ALL of these principles: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-delineated.
***Strengths: 1. Being able to walk away after opponent spent enough time invested in negotiating. 2. Awkward silences. 3. Can make up other strengths.
***Weaknesses: 1. Going the loss-loss route and not knowing when to give in. 2. Can make up other weaknesses.
3 SMART goals: (can use another if one of these isn’t expandable to write)
Goal 1: To try to understand other people’s views and opinions clearly
Goal 2: Learn to compromise at times to reach a win-win solution that benefits all
Goal 3: Listen first before you speak. Listening to other people’s views without interrupting or defending your own opinions is ideal for every type of communication. Be keen to listen and ask questions to understand exactly what the other person is saying in all the situations present. Listening keenly allows you to understand what the other person is saying.
