Discuss “theory theory” (as described by Miller and using the talks given by Gopnik). How does it differ from Piaget’s views? Describe some of the ways you see, or discuss how deeply the differences between “theory theory” and Piaget take us in terms of understanding real children.
Review William Crain’s assessment of Piaget (and his chapter on Piaget). Does Gopnik accurately describe Piaget’s view of children’s thinking? (irrational etc)– if so, provide evidence; if you are not sure or disagree, discuss points that raises questions for you.
Discuss why play is important for children’s learning. Discuss both Crain’s and Copnik’s views on this
Miller makes several points about points all (or most) theorists agree on. Then she goes on to argue no one theory can “satisfactorily explain development.” Do you agree? Why or why not ?
What are the strengths (as she describes them) of dynamic systems theory? Discuss these strengths and consider the strengths she describes in terms of her conclusion.
